Joseph Reagan Akena won the Johnnie Walker Uganda Golf Amateur Open Title after sinking a crucial putt on the 18th hole to claim his maiden championship at Entebbe Golf Club on Saturday.

Akena edged out experienced golfer Joseph Cwinya-ai, who missed a three-foot putt that would have forced a rare playoff.

Cwinya-a, the day two leader, who had impressed on the final round with a remarkable par save on the 14th hole and consecutive birdies on the 15th and 16th holes, saw his earlier efforts overshadowed by a heartbreaking miss on the 17th hole.

The victory marks a historic moment for Akena, who was lifted onto the shoulders of his peers, including former champion Godfrey Nsubuga, in a joyous celebration on the 18th green.

“At Johnnie Walker, we believe in celebrating those who Keep Walking, who push boundaries and strive for greatness. This Amateur Open has been a testament to that spirit,” said Robert Nsibirwa, UBL’s Marketing Manager in charge of Spirits, during the prize-giving ceremony.
