Rev. Joel Mukalo, the Bishop of Yahweh Pentecostal Mission, has made an appeal to President Museveni, urging him to pardon two of his followers currently on remand for contempt of court charges. The individuals in question, Mr. Emmanuel Owiny and Mr. Benedard Ogwang, are facing accusations of robbery and public disturbance after allegedly obstructing court bailiffs in Lango Sub-region.
The dispute between Pentecostal Assemblies of God (PAG) Uganda, led by Bishop Peter Emyau, and the now-defunct PAG Lira, presently known as Yahweh Pentecostal Mission, dates back to 2015. The legal proceedings stemming from this disagreement have resulted in tension within the Yahweh community, leading to protests against the court ruling.
The termination of Bishop Mukalo’s services in the Lira Pastorate in 2013 is believed to have catalyzed the schism between PAG Uganda and Yahweh Pentecostal Mission. Bishop Mukalo expressed his plea for presidential intervention during the commissioning of Awake Pentecostal Church in Otuke District, emphasizing the innocence of the detained individuals and the widespread discontent among Yahweh believers.
According to Bishop Mukalo, churches affiliated with PAG Uganda, including those under the Yahweh Pentecostal Mission banner, were established through communal efforts, including fundraising initiatives organized by their followers. He lamented the consequences of the ongoing conflict, citing the arrest, torment, and imprisonment of Yahweh Christians, with some still detained in Otuke District.

In response to the bishop’s appeal, the State Minister for Northern Uganda, Ms. Grace Freedom Kwiyucwiny, offered reassurance to Yahweh believers, expressing confidence that divine intervention would bring resolution to their plight. She emphasized the belief that ultimate victory lies with the Lord, providing hope to those affected by the ongoing legal strife.
Background information reveals that Yahweh Pentecostal Mission operates churches across several districts in Uganda, including Lira, Amolatar, Otuke, Alebtong, Dokolo, Kole, Kwania, and Apac. With a sizable membership exceeding 300,000 individuals, predominantly comprising women and children, the mission plays a significant role in the religious landscape of these regions.
