Blow For Bafana Bafana Ahead of Uganda Cranes Clash

0

Bafana Bafana’s quest for a strong start in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Uganda Cranes has faced a significant challenge with the news that captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams will miss the encounter.

Coach Hugo Broos has announced his final squad for the openers against Uganda Cranes and South Sudan, highlighting the absence of Williams, who is sidelined due to injury.

South Africa will host Uganda at Orlando Stadium on Friday, 6 September 2024.

Williams’ leadership and goalkeeping prowess will be sorely missed, as Broos emphasized the impact of his absence.

“If you have a guy like Ronwen who will not be with us in the two games, that is a big problem. He is not just a good goalkeeper, he is also a good captain,” Broos stated.

In Williams’ absence, Broos has chosen Ricardo Goss (SuperSport United), Veli Mothwa (AmaZulu), and Sipho Chaine (Orlando Pirates) to compete for the starting goalkeeper position.

The decision on who will start in goal and who will serve as captain during this critical period is yet to be made.

The final squad, trimmed from an initial 38-player list, also includes notable absences such as Thabiso Monyane (Orlando Pirates), and Given Msimango (Kaizer Chiefs), among others.
