The National Unity Platform (NUP) president, Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, is gearing up to address the party’s top decision-making body regarding the fate of Mathias Mpuuga, who faces calls to step down from his role as a parliamentary commissioner.
In a statement made on March 4, Bobi Wine announced his intention to meet with the National Executive Committee (NEC) to deliberate on the matter concerning Mathias Mpuuga. He emphasized the importance of seeking guidance from senior leaders within the party to reach a resolution.
The controversy surrounding Mathias Mpuuga erupted after NUP demanded his resignation amid allegations of benefiting from a questionable Shs500 million “services award.” Despite these calls, Mpuuga has refuted the claims and expressed his refusal to resign.
In a recent interview on CBS radio, Mpuuga defended himself, asserting that he has not yet received the purported Shs500 million. He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Bobi Wine’s leadership while emphasizing the need for personal and collective growth within the party.

The allegations regarding the Shs500 million award surfaced through various channels, including social media platforms and contributions from concerned citizens and journalists. However, Mpuuga maintained his innocence and dismissed the accusations.
Bobi Wine reiterated the importance of following due process in addressing such matters, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability within the party. He clarified that NUP’s intention was to advise Mpuuga to step down from his role as a parliamentary commissioner.
Despite efforts to resolve the situation internally, Bobi Wine expressed disappointment over the discrepancy between Mpuuga’s public statement and the discussions held during their meeting. He emphasized the need for honesty and integrity among party members.
Regarding the broader issue of corruption within NUP, Bobi Wine acknowledged the challenges in holding MPs accountable for their actions. He clarified that while the party can’t directly remove MPs from Parliament, it can ensure transparency and uphold ethical standards.
Reflecting on past incidents involving financial transactions, Bobi Wine recalled instructing NUP MPs to return funds they received, but only one member attempted to do so. He acknowledged the limitations in addressing corruption effectively and stressed the importance of accountability.
