Adu Rando, the Managing Director of Nile Breweries Limited, and Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) Commissioner General John Musinguzi convened to discuss strategies aimed at combating the sale of illicit alcohol in a recent meeting.
Accompanied by Emmanuel Mugisha, the company’s spokesperson, Rando highlighted the challenges posed by illicit alcohol sales and requested URA’s assistance in negotiating a reduction in the rate of digital tax stamps and the implementation of a new taxation regime on beer.
Rando expressed concerns regarding the current taxation system, which imposes taxes on the alcohol industry based on alcohol percentage, deeming it burdensome for the sector.

“As URA, we are fully committed to assisting Nile Breweries Limited, particularly in addressing issues related to illicit and unstamped alcohol. Additionally, we are exploring avenues to learn from neighboring countries such as Tanzania regarding their tax stamp rates to potentially negotiate a reduction,” affirmed Musinguzi.
Furthermore, Musinguzi disclosed URA’s proactive approach in enhancing enforcement efforts nationwide to curb the circulation of unstamped alcoholic beverages.
“We have deployed personnel as part of our enforcement initiative to meticulously inspect markets and shops to identify and confiscate unstamped products,” revealed the Commissioner General.
The collaborative efforts between Nile Breweries Limited and URA signify a concerted commitment to combatting the proliferation of illicit alcohol, which poses significant health and economic risks to consumers and the industry.
By leveraging their respective expertise and resources, both parties aim to strengthen regulatory mechanisms and ensure compliance with taxation and quality standards within the alcohol sector.
As the dialogue continues, stakeholders remain optimistic about fostering a regulatory environment that fosters responsible alcohol production, distribution, and consumption, ultimately safeguarding public health and revenue integrity.
