Canada extends travel restrictions to June 21

Canada has extended travel restrictions to tackle the spread of coronavirus, but there is hope in the future.

Travel continues to be restricted from all countries, including the United States, until June 21.

The Canadian border was closed for non-essential travel over a year ago. For the first time since the end of travel, restrictions are insight.

Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau said on May 18 that the southern border with the United States could reopen once three-quarters of Canadians are vaccinated.

“We are all anxious to get back to normal, but we know that before getting back to normal, cases need to be under control and over 75% of people need to be vaccinated,” he said during a press conference.

According to the COVID-19 tracking website, developed by a University of Saskatchewan student, more than 46% of Canadians have received their first dose of the vaccine.

Canada-U.S border to reopen

The Canadian government has begun preliminary discussions on reopening the Canada-U.S. Border, according to Bloomberg.

There are discussions to reopen the borders but it’s not imminent. That would depend on the number of COVID-19 cases in the two countries and the percentage of the population vaccinated.

Bloomberg reports that the two countries could adopt a new system allowing vaccinated people to travel between Canada and the United States without having to take a COVID-19 test or be quarantined for 14 days.

Exemption to Travel restrictions

Canada still maintains the flow of essential trade and travel. Travel restrictions are for non-essential travel that includes reasons like shopping, entertainment, or sightseeing.

Currently, some people are exempt from travel restrictions. This includes Canadians, permanent residents, and their families.

In addition, some temporary foreign workers, as well as international students attending an educational institution with a COVID-19 preparedness plan are also exempt.

Protected persons and those who wish to come to Canada on compassionate grounds may also be exempt.

Travelers coming to Canada must present a negative COVID-19 test up to 72 hours before arriving in Canada.

They will also have to take another test upon arrival. While waiting for the test results, air travelers have to self-quarantine for three days in a government-authorized hotel.

Anyone coming to Canada will need to be quarantined for 14 days. The three-day hotel stay may count towards your 14 days. Compassionate travelers may request to be released early from quarantine to attend a funeral or to care for a loved one.
