Cavendish University community across the globe is engulfed in grief following the untimely passing of Otim Ricky (SID: 017-739), a finalist student who was pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and Finance.
According to an official communication from the university’s Dean of Students, Bernard Ochan, Ricky succumbed to diabetic complications last week while undergoing treatment at Nakasero Hospital.
His death has cast a sombre mood across the institution, particularly among classmates and lecturers who had looked forward to celebrating his graduation in August 2026.
Ricky will be laid to rest on Monday, May 11, 2026, at his ancestral home in Kabedopong Village, Gulu District.
In a condolence message addressed to students, university management described the loss as heartbreaking and extended sympathies to the deceased’s family, friends, and the wider student fraternity.
“As a university community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and classmates. May the Lord comfort all those grieving during this difficult time,” part of the statement read.
The institution also called upon students and staff to keep Deputy Dean of Students Ms.Joseline in prayer following the loss of her brother-in-law.
The passing of Ricky, who stood on the brink of completing his academic journey, has sparked an outpouring of grief and reflection within the Cavendish community, with many students describing him as humble, resilient and determined despite battling health complications.
His demise serves as another painful reminder of the growing burden of non-communicable diseases among young people.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted,” the university quoted from Matthew 5:4 while consoling mourners.
Funeral arrangements indicate that family, friends, students and university representatives are expected to travel to Gulu District for his final send-off.
