Minister of Water and Environment, Sam Cheptoris, highlighted Uganda’s commitment to addressing global environmental challenges in a statement emphasizing the critical need for collective action. He underscored the nation’s dedication to sustainable development and environmental stewardship, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to combat climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
According to Cheptoris, Uganda’s government remains steadfast in protecting natural resources, including forests, wetlands, and water bodies, while also implementing measures to control pollution. Notably, the country has allocated 16% of its land surface to Protected Areas for biodiversity conservation, demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental preservation.
A key focus of Uganda’s environmental efforts lies in the manufacturing of electric and emission-free vehicles, including buses, cars, motorcycles, and boats, aimed at reducing pollution levels in both domestic and regional markets. By prioritizing sustainable transportation solutions, Uganda seeks to mitigate the environmental impact of traditional vehicles and promote cleaner, more eco-friendly alternatives.
Minister Cheptoris delivered these remarks during the Sixth Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA6) held at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi from February 26 to March 1, 2024. This gathering, which serves as the world’s top decision-making body on environmental issues, brought together leaders and representatives from across the globe to address pressing environmental concerns.

He emphasized the importance of adopting green and circular economy approaches, urging nations to take responsibility for safeguarding the planet and securing a sustainable future for humanity.
In addition to advocating for environmental sustainability, Uganda is championing Extended Producer Responsibility as a means to address plastic pollution and promote product life cycle management. Minister Cheptoris urged all nations to embrace nature-based solutions to environmental challenges and cautioned against prioritizing wealth accumulation at the expense of nature’s well-being.
As Uganda continues to prioritize environmental conservation and sustainability, it calls upon the global community to join forces in addressing environmental challenges and fostering a harmonious relationship between humanity and nature. Through collective action and cooperation, nations can work towards a more resilient and sustainable future for all.
