The Gulu Chief Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to Dr. Lena Zedriga, the Vice Chairperson for Northern Uganda of the National Unity Platform (NUP), who is facing charges of inciting violence.
Dr. Zedriga is charged under Section 79(1) of the Penal Code Act, which relates to incitement to violence.
In his ruling, Chief Magistrate Augustine Alule held that the applicant had fulfilled all the necessary bail requirements and was therefore eligible for release. The court granted her a cash bail of Shs1 million.
The courtroom was filled beyond capacity with Dr. Zedriga’s supporters, friends, and relatives, who welcomed the ruling with excitement and applause.
According to the prosecution, in December 2025, while in various parts of Northern Uganda — including Gulu, Amuru, Omoro, and Nwoya districts — Dr. Zedriga allegedly incited members of the public to commit acts of violence against supporters of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) on the basis of their political affiliation.
Dr. Zedriga, a former magistrate, reportedly went missing a day after the January 15 presidential polls. She later resurfaced on February 6 at the Gulu Chief Magistrate’s Court, where she was formally charged.
The case has been adjourned to a later date for further mention and hearing.
