DESPERATE INDEED: Minister Betty Among Camp Allies With NUP To Front Councilor Awor Angweri To Challenge Ruth Aceng For NRM Flag Ahead Of 2026

In a bid to financially and politically exhaust her Lira City woman MP seat opponent and fellow minister Jane Ruth Aceng, the gender minister Bettty Amongi has resorted to inciting people to challenge the incumbent inside NRM for the position of flag bearer.

Amongi, who realises that this is going to be a do or die race, seems determined to leave no stone unturned. She is fearful that if Aceng retains the NRM flag unopposed, that will strengthen her and also market her more to the president as an effective mobilizer and the undisputed ruling party leader for Lira City.

Amongi wants to oust Aceng from Lira City and doesn’t seem prepared to be on the NRM ticket but that of UPC. She is calculating that she can get the UPC flag unopposed and face Aceng after being exhausted from NRM internal elections.

The supporters of Workers Councillor Sarah Awor Angweri are already bragging that the gender minister will help them mobilize up to 500m to make Aceng sweat and become exhausted inside the NRM primaries.

To create momentum, Angweri was a few days ago facilitated with money which came through mobile money to organize a press conference at St. Lira Hotel from where she declared her battle against Aceng for the NRM party ticket. The female workers Councilor received a lot of help and support from renowned Amongi allies as she organized and addressed the press conference at Sam Engola’s Hotel.

All this happening at a time when the gender minister is clearly restless to destroy Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero also known as Aceng Atedero and become the new MP for the Lira City. Even when Amongi has a lot of money, Aceng remains formidable and popular with the ordinary people of Lira City regardless of party affiliation. The Amongi camp won’t mind fronting anyone against Aceng for NRM flag even if that is someone from NUP who is willing to play their game.

One of Amongi allies who was involved in organising the press conference was Daniel Okello who ensured that several National Unity Platform members and activists came around to flank Angweri as she addressed reporters. Indeed, NUP colors of red were prominent at the press conference.

Much as Angweri made a declaration to contest in the NRM primaries for woman MP of Lira City, many of those that attended her press briefing were members of the opposition that came from the rural districts of Kole and Lira but not city. This included a one Igwe, a commonly-known mobiliser of NUP from Akalo in Kole district.

Other attendees who talked big at the press conference included Joel Juke from Ogur Sub County in Lira district. Juke is very well known for causing chaos during elections. He is Lira District Woman MP Linda Auma’s strong follower who in 2015 snatched the ballot boxes full of ticked ballot papers from the NRM registrar and took off with them in a bid to rob victory for Auma as a flag bearer.

There was also in attendance a one Yuweri, a NUP mobiliser and a resident of Bar Sub County in Lira district besides Lydia Akello a.k.a Akello Alaya and Angwec Pamela (presidential advisor Sam Engola’s niece). These two babes are close special friends for Okello Daniel who is a strong ally for minister Betty Amongi.

Many supporters of the NRM believe that fronting Angweri, who is renowned for fake news and chaotic politics, could be disastrous and will enable minister Amongi to incite chaos and bad publicity for the NRM primaries in Lira City. Whatever happens, Aceng will be hard to sustainably destroy and demonize because the ordinary Lira City residents know her values and what she generally stands for.

NBS TV Lango sub region Bureau chief Isaac Otwii is another Amongi propagandist who aided the Angweri press conference. He is the man who mobilized fellow media reporters to attend and he is also the one who oversaw the distribution of Shs500k, which came to Angweri through mobile money means for distribution, to news reporters present.

Many of the news reporters had initially been reluctant but were subsequently swayed by the desire to earn some transport refund. Daniel Okello did oversee the distribution of Shs20k to each of the opposition party activists who came to cheer as Angweri struggled to communicate and make herself understood.

But as she accepts to become a proxy through whom Amongi can antagonize Aceng for the NRM flag, Angweri has inadvertently exposed herself to growing scrutiny among her own core constituents, the workers, who have never stopped to grumble about the money that international organizations have been giving to facilitate inconspicuous capacity building workshops and trips abroad.

She also has a record of peddling fake news, propagating chaos and hate at the Lira City Council where she currently serves from.
