Kampala — There was panic and frustration at the luxurious Fairway Hotel after heavy flooding invaded the premises, destroying property worth billions of shillings following what residents and business owners described as reckless drainage works by Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) engineers.
The flooding occurred after KCCA construction teams allegedly blocked a major drainage channel along Mackinnon Road behind the hotel, near the official residence of the Speaker of Parliament, causing rainwater to accumulate and violently spill into nearby buildings.
Eyewitnesses said water quickly overwhelmed parts of the high-end hotel, flooding several ground-floor rooms and forcing terrified staff and guests to scramble for safety as furniture, electronics, bedding, and other valuable property were submerged.
Videos circulating online showed water gushing through corridors and hotel rooms, with some sections of the lower floor completely immersed as workers struggled to salvage items from the flooded premises.
The incident has sparked outrage among city residents and business operators, many of whom blamed KCCA engineers for allegedly failing to put in place proper drainage management systems before commencing road construction works in the area.
“This is pure negligence. You cannot block a drainage channel without creating an alternative water passage. These engineers are causing unnecessary destruction to businesses and property,” one angry resident said.
The affected drainage point is reportedly located near the same spot where security personnel attached to the Speaker of Parliament allegedly shot and injured a woman driving a Toyota Harrier last week.
Residents and motorists accuse KCCA of repeatedly launching infrastructure projects in Kampala without proper planning, resulting in severe flooding whenever heavy rains hit the city.
Critics argue that instead of improving urban infrastructure, some road works are worsening drainage challenges by interfering with natural water channels and existing drainage systems.
Business owners around Nakasero and surrounding areas warned that if immediate corrective measures are not taken, more establishments could suffer losses during the ongoing rainy season.
The flooding at Fairway Hotel has also reignited debate about Kampala’s poor urban drainage systems and the apparent lack of coordination between contractors, engineers, and city planners.
As one of Kampala’s oldest and most prestigious hotels hosting international tourists, diplomats, and corporate clients, the incident is not only ashame to Kampala City but also the entire nation.
By press time, KCCA had not yet officially commented on this destruction caused by the flooding.
Residents are now demanding accountability from the city authority, with some calling for investigations into the engineers supervising the road works blamed for the incident.
“This could have been avoided if proper planning was done. Kampala deserves better than this kind of careless engineering,” another resident lamented.
