The Ministry of Health Uganda has assured the public that Uganda remains safe and that there is “no cause for alarm” following the death of a Congolese national who succumbed to Ebola Virus Disease in Kampala earlier this week.
In an official press release issued on May 16, 2026, the Uganda Media Centre said the patient, a man from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, had crossed into Uganda and later died of Ebola in a Kampala hospital on Thursday, May 14.
Authorities said his body was returned to the DRC on the same day.
Health officials have since launched a comprehensive contact-tracing exercise involving everyone who came into contact with the deceased, including medical workers, relatives and friends.
“The Ministry is confident that there is no cause for alarm. The situation has been contained,” the statement emphasized.
The reassurance comes amid growing regional concern over a deadly Ebola outbreak in eastern DRC that has already claimed dozens of lives and prompted neighboring countries, including Uganda and South Sudan, to strengthen surveillance at border points.
According to the government, Uganda’s well-established Ebola response system was immediately activated after the case was confirmed.
Uganda has successfully managed several Ebola outbreaks in recent years, with health authorities relying on rapid diagnosis, isolation, contact tracing and public awareness campaigns to stop transmission.
Officials say the swift response in this latest case significantly reduces the risk of community spread.
While stressing that the situation is under control, the Ministry of Health urged the public to remain alert and observe standard precautions.
Symptoms of Ebola include sudden fever, extreme fatigue, chest pain, diarrhea, vomiting, unexplained bleeding and yellowing of the eyes.
Ugandans were advised to wash their hands regularly, avoid contact with bodily fluids and immediately report any suspected symptoms to the nearest health facility.
The statement, signed by Alan Kasujja, was intended to reassure citizens and prevent panic as authorities continue monitoring the situation.
The government said Uganda’s health surveillance systems remain fully operational and capable of responding quickly to imported infectious diseases.
For now, officials insist the isolated case has been effectively contained and that there is no indication of wider transmission within the country.
