The corruption probe involving former speaker of parliament Anita Annet Among has reportedly widened to include officials from the Electoral Commission (EC) and the judiciary.
The joint multi-agency investigation, reportedly sanctioned by President Yoweri Museveni, is looking into allegations of corruption, money laundering, and illicit enrichment within Parliament and other government institutions.
The probe has now reportedly extended to agencies including the EC and the Judiciary, where investigators believe Among wielded considerable influence.
Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and forensic services, supported by operatives from Defence Intelligence and Security, have searched properties linked to Among in Nakasero, Kigo, Ntinda, and Bukedea.
Since Saturday, investigators have focused largely on the former Speaker, whose residences were searched, leading to the seizure of at least six luxury vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce that reportedly triggered the investigations.
Sources close to the probe say the investigation is no longer limited to Among and has now spread to other government agencies, with several officials either already summoned or expected to appear before investigators.
URN has learned that some Electoral Commission staff, including lawyers and commissioners, are among officials who have reportedly been interrogated at Kibuli CID headquarters during closed-door sessions.
The officials are said to have been questioned over their alleged links to Among during the recently concluded general elections, including claims that some facilitated the disqualification of candidates to favour her preferred contenders or used irregular methods to influence election outcomes.
“The officials have already appeared before investigators, but many others are still expected to respond to the summons,” a source said on condition of anonymity.
“Detectives want to review their communication history, recover deleted messages, and take statements on their alleged links to Anita Among. No arrests have been made so far,” the source added.
At least 10 officials from both the Judiciary and the Electoral Commission are said to be under investigation.
However, Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi said he was unaware of any EC officials implicated in the ongoing joint security probe into corruption, illicit enrichment, and money laundering.
“I don’t know about them yet, unless you have their names and contacts, you can call them directly and ask whether they’ve appeared before the Criminal Investigations Directorate to respond to those allegations,” Mucunguzi said.
The probe has also widened to include several members of parliament and parliamentary staff, some of whom have reportedly been summoned for questioning, although others are said to be avoiding investigators.
The MPs and staff are allegedly linked to businesses associated with Among, while others reportedly appeared in transaction records recovered during phone forensic examinations.
Although police and army officials have not issued a formal statement on the investigations, Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba this week posted on X that investigators involved in “operation end corruption” had already recovered funds that would be returned to the government treasury.
“We have already retrieved quite a lot of the people’s money and property,” Muhoozi posted.
“Everything will be returned to the Treasury. I will give a partial report soon. I advise all government officials to co-operate fully with the security services in order to avoid arrest.”
Investigators are reportedly examining financial networks, procurement deals, and coordination among politically connected figures in parliament and government ministries, using data extracted from confiscated phones to trace communications, financial records, and electronic transactions.
The corruption, money laundering, and illicit enrichment investigations continue to expand, with more officials and MPs expected to come under scrutiny. The fallout has already begun reshaping the race to succeed the speaker of the 12th parliament.
