Eight people have been confirmed dead following a head-on collision between a bus and a tipper truck on the Kampala-Masaka highway early Sunday morning.
The accident occurred around 3 a.m. at Kabaale-Bugonzi and involved a Jaguar bus, registration number UBP 964T, and an Isuzu Elf truck, registration number UAV 988N. According to Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura, the crash happened when the driver of the Jaguar bus attempted to overtake an unidentified vehicle, swerving into the opposite lane and colliding with the oncoming Isuzu Elf.
“The bus rolled multiple times, resulting in the deaths of eight passengers and injuries to 20 others,” Kananura reported.
Police quickly responded to the scene, transporting the injured to Masaka Referral Hospital for medical attention while the deceased were taken to the hospital mortuary.
“Both vehicles have been towed to Lukaya Police Station for further investigation,” Kananura added.
He urged all road users to exercise extreme caution and adhere to traffic regulations, particularly when overtaking, to prevent such tragic accidents.
