Eng. Moses Michael Odongo Okune has been declared the newly-elected Paramount Chief of the Lango Kingdom, known locally as Won Nyaci. The poll, praised by observers for its fairness, culminated in Odongo’s victory after a competitive two-way race. Scheduled for enthronement in November, he will succeed the outgoing chief, Yosam Odur.

Representatives from each participating clan, including the Awitong (clan leader), formed the electorate, totaling 15 voters per clan. The election took place at the proposed Akiibua Stadium, marking a significant event for the Lango Kingdom.

Six candidates were initially nominated, but only three were deemed eligible for the election process. Dr. Richard Nam, a candidate who failed to appear, was disqualified due to the prohibition of proxy voting. The voting proceeded smoothly, with each clan’s 15 representatives casting their ballots.

Following the conclusion of voting, Tom Otim, Chairperson of the Lango Kingdom Election Commission, reported the active participation of over 130 clan leaders in the electoral process. Despite facing challenges such as threats and intimidation, the commission successfully executed its duties, attributed to divine guidance according to Otim.

Notably, the election commission encountered opposition from the outgoing Paramount Chief, Yosam Odur Ebii, who attempted to dismiss them twice. However, the Council of Owitong, in defiance of Odur’s actions, upheld the commission’s mandate. Despite some clan leaders loyal to Odur seeking legal intervention to halt the election, the court dismissed their application, allowing the process to proceed as planned.

In contrast, his closest contender, Dan Okello, secured a distant 139 votes, accounting for 7.5% of the total.

With his resounding victory, Eng. Moses Michael Odongo Okune was officially declared the Paramount Chief-elect, marking a significant transition in Lango Kingdom’s leadership.
