The FDC Party has voiced its apprehensions regarding the significant number of vacant positions within the public service, as highlighted by the Auditor General’s report. According to the report, there are currently over 60,847 unfilled positions across various government departments and agencies.
In addition to the issue of vacant positions, the FDC has drawn attention to the delays in appointing key officials, such as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Governor of the Bank of Uganda. The absence of timely appointments for these crucial roles raises questions about effective governance and contributes to the escalating levels of unemployment.
The prolonged vacancy in the position of Inspector General of Police, following the expiration of the previous officeholder’s contract, is a matter of concern for the FDC. Similarly, the delay in appointing a new Governor of the Bank of Uganda adds to the uncertainty surrounding leadership transitions in vital institutions.
The FDC emphasizes the urgency of addressing these issues, particularly in light of the high number of graduates entering the job market annually. Makerere University alone produces approximately 12,000 graduates each year. Therefore, if the government were to fill the reported 60,847 vacancies, it would provide employment opportunities for graduates from Makerere University over the past five years.
