Hajjat Aisha Kabanda a former Presidential Assistant sitting in State House has narrated why President Museveni will make sure that he accommodates Kayunga district National Resistance Movement (NRM) chairperson Moses Kariisa Karangwa in the top party leadership.
Kabanda who executed Museveni’s private assignments before joining the opposition said that when he saw a dossier issued by Museveni condemning the sectarian practices exhibited during his party’s recent national delegates conference that resulted into Karangwa’s defeat on the position of the party’s vice chairperson in charge of Buganda, she realised that Museveni is putting out something which politically stuck on his chest and needed a solution
“I will not be shocked to see Karangwa topping the list of the five nominees from who the NRM party chairperson will chose to sit on the party’s top organ, the Central Executive Committee (CEC). Museveni understands what Karangwa means in his coming 2026 election Victory and he cannot play with him,” Kabanda said
In his dossier, the president praised Karangwa for being one of the most active NRM mobilizers noting that it was wrong for him to lose the election because of the statements made by his opponents including State Minister for Microfinance Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo and former minister Ssalongo Godfrey Kiwanda Suubi.
Museveni explained that even though the large population in Buganda are Baganda, when it comes to voting, they should look for capacity and dedication and not one’s background. He added that the reason why they won the 1986 liberation war was because they did not look at people’s tribes and religion.
However, Kabanda said that Museveni realised that people with Rwanda origin were bitter with Karangwa’s defeat and to win them back, he had to come up with a consolation statement distancing himself from whatever happened.
She explained that Museveni understands that people with Rwanda origins in districts of Gomba, Butambala, Mubende, Lwengo, Kalungu, Ssebabule, Kiboga, Bukomasimbi, Rakai, Nakasongola, Kayunga and others in Buganda make a big number of voters and he cannot annoy them.
Kabanda who is the deputy secretary general of the opposition leading party the National Unity Platform (NUP) said that her and other politicians in districts dominated by people with Rwanda origin are fighting to learn how to speak Kinyarwanda so as to win over their support.
Frank Gashumba the chairperson of the council of Abavandimwe in Uganda noted that people with a Rwanda origin will determine who will win political positions in Uganda especially in Buganda because they are the majority and are in many families.
He declared that in the coming 2026 general elections, Abavandimwe will support Museveni because of the declarations he has made against their discrimination when it comes to receiving government services.
However, Mukono Municipality legislator Betty Nambooze guided that it was wrong for Gashumba to declare that all Bavandimwe will vote for Museveni in the coming elections, noting that he is making the a target when government change comes.
Charles Rwomushana, a former security operative said that for a long time Museveni has been using Banyarwanda as a weapon to win their support.
He noted that when he was fighting in Luwero, Museveni accused president Milton Obote of being a bad leader who discriminated him by calling him a Munyarwanda yet he was a citizen of Uganda.
“He did that because he wanted people of Rwanda origin to support him and you know how determined they can be. They joined him, the likes of Paul Kagame and many others,” Rwomushana said
He added that during the 1996 elections, when Museveni realised that Democratic Party’s Paul Ssemogerere had a lot of support in greater Masaka, his started accusing him of being a bad leader who discriminate him. His intention was to annoy people of Banyarwanda descent in Masaka not to vote Ssemogerere and he scored.
Rwomushana said that among the leaders who value people with Rwanda origin is Museveni and because of this respect he gives them, when Gashumba introduced himself as their leader, he directed that his security be beefed up since he is looking at him as a cultural leader like other cultural leaders in the country including Buganda Kingdom’s Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi.
Simon Kayitana another leader in the Rwanda community in Uganda distanced himself from the declaration that they will all support Museveni in the coming elections noting that they will vote a person who will work on their problems insisting that Museveni is adamant on issues affecting their community.
Justice Nameere who supported Karangwa’s candidature said that Museveni issued the said dossier after having a private conversation with them where they provided evidence to prove that their candidate was defeated because of the sectarian statements made hours to the voting at Kololo independent grounds.
Karangwa’s team accused the Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka of influencing his defeat through misleading sectarian statements against him where they accused him of not being a Omuganda thus he cannot represent Buganda on CEC.
This investigative website has established that lobbying for the president’s eye to be nominated on the CEC is in high gear and among those fighting for the five slots include former Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, Captain Mike Mukula and Dr Chris Baryomunsi who all were defeated at Kololo.
