Friday Night Lights (FNL) basketball is back with a bang for its 10th season, set to tip off on Friday, September 27, 2024, at the Lugogo Hockey Pitch.
The much-anticipated return of the event, which blends competitive basketball with entertainment, was announced by FNL Team Leader Tom Ocamringa during a launch party held at NRG Radio’s offices in Kampala.
“This being the 10th FNL season, we thought we would spice things up a little more,” Ocamringa said, highlighting the extensive community activations leading up to the event.
These activations, which took place at seven basketball courts across Kampala, aimed to engage local basketball enthusiasts, promoting both FNL and the sport itself.
“They went beyond promoting awareness about the FNL events to fostering the growth of the beautiful game of basketball by engaging with local communities and expanding the game’s reach beyond the conventional experiences,” Ocamringa added.
The court action will feature eight teams, including fan-favorites Team Afande and Team Comfort, both returning from last season.
They will be joined by Team Sera, Team Kamwada, Team Obleng, Team Wazee, and a fans’ team led by Albert Ahabwe, selected from the neighborhood courts.
In a significant addition, the Luol Deng Foundation will field a team, bringing South Sudanese flair to the games.
Deng, a two-time NBA All-Star and president of the South Sudan Basketball Federation, continues to support basketball in East Africa through his foundation.
As FNL enters the second year of a three-year contract with Nile Breweries Limited, Castle Lite beer returns as the headline sponsor. “Castle Lite loves basketball and wants you to enjoy the ‘Lite side’ of the game on and off the court. Come through in big numbers and let loose with your favorite beer in hand amidst the thrills on court,” said Eric Malinga, Castle Lite brand manager.
NRG Radio, known for its youth-driven energy, returns as the official “vibes” partner for the second consecutive season.
“We are excited to partner with FNL again,” said Kevin Bellwood, NRG Radio’s Group Program Director.
“With what’s lined up for Season 10, it’s a must-see event for basketball fans and anyone who loves a good NRG party.”
Mountain Dew also joins the event as the official soft drinks partner. Grace Namutebi, Mountain Dew’s brand manager, said, “We shall keep the teams refreshed throughout the games, and fans can enjoy video games in the fanzone along with cool gear giveaways during the halftime challenges.”
With teams set, sponsors in place, and entertainment on the agenda, the 10th season of FNL promises to be a thrilling blend of sport and showbiz, delivering both on and off the court.
