Ugandan middle-distance runner Halimah Nakaayi is set to make a comeback after a disappointing performance in the Women’s 800m heats at the ongoing Olympics in Paris.

The 2019 World Champion failed to secure an automatic spot in the semifinals, finishing fourth in Heat Two on Friday with a time of 2:00.51.

In a highly competitive heat, Daily Cooper Gaspar from Cuba, Prudence Sekgodiso from South Africa, and France’s Rachel Pellaud claimed the top three positions, earning their automatic advancement to the semifinals.

The new format at this year’s Olympics, which includes a repechage round in some athletics events such as the 800m, offers athletes like Nakaayi a second chance to progress.

Nakaayi will compete in the repechage on Saturday, placed in Heat One.

The first-place finisher in each repechage heat, along with the next two fastest runners across all heats, will advance to the semifinals.

Joining Nakaayi in Heat One are Flavia Maria De Lima of Brazil, Galvydyte Gabija from Lithuania, Italy’s Eloisa Coiro, Abbey Caldwell from Australia, Audrey Werro of Switzerland, and Spain’s Lorena Martin.
