Wakiso Giants defeated Mbale Heroes 1-0 at the Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium to register their second win of the 2024/25 Uganda Premier League (UPL) season.
Wakiso Giants’ new signings, goalkeeper James Alitho and striker Herbert Asiimwe showed great impact in the Purple Sharks’ victory at home.
Alitho kept his first clean-sheet, while Asiimwe scored his third goal of the season to help the Purple Sharks pick up another important three points.
Asiimwe was picked by Marvin Oshaba from inside the box to slot his effort far beyond goalkeeper Paul Mujapani’s reach in the 16th minute.
Meanwhile, the Surgeons were subjected to their second defeat in three games, having also lost away to Express in the league opener.
Asiimwe is now topping the UPL goal-scorers’ chart with three goals so far, having also scored against Bright Stars and Maroons.
The Friday result will have a great impact on the top half of the table. Wakiso Giants (7) are now just two points below table leaders NEC.
The Purple Sharks have climbed up to the second position on the log, misplacing defending champions SC Villa (6).
Next up for Wakiso Giants is an away tie against UPDF on Tuesday, October 1, while Mbale Heroes will host URA on Saturday, October 5.
