Here are the regions with the highest fertility rates in Uganda

The recently released final report of the 2024 population and housing census has indicated that Uganda’s fertility rate is 4.5 births per woman.

The 4.5 is however a decline from the 5.8 registered during the 2014 census but the trend shows there has been a drop from 7.1 in 1991 and 7.0 in 2002.

Regions

The census report shows that Teso at 5.5 births per woman has the highest fertility rate, closely followed by Bukedi at 5.1, Busoga and Bunyoro  at 5 births per woman, Karamoja at 4.9, Elgon at 4.8 births per woman and Acholi at 4.7 births per woman.

The census report also shows that Buganda at 3.8 births per woman has the lowest fertility rate, followed by Ankole and Kigezi at 4.2 and 4.3 births per woman.

Mortality rate

In terms of mortality, the census report shows that  34 children out of 1000 births are expected to die before the age of one on average around the country, a decline from 122 in 1991, 87 in 2002 and 50 in 2014.

On the other side, 46 children per 1000 births would be expected to died before the age of five, also a decline from 203 in 1991, 156 in 2002 and 74 in 2014.
