UCU Lady Canons finished the first round of the 2024 National Basketball League with a resounding 66-46 victory over KIU Rangers in a game held at the Lugogo Indoor Arena on Sunday.
The match had promised excitement, especially after KIU Rangers ended JKL Lady Dolphins’ unbeaten streak the previous day.
However, it became evident that KIU had expended more energy in that victory, as they struggled to keep up with the relentless performance of UCU Lady Canons.
UCU Lady Canons dominated from onset, taking control of the game early on. With a commanding lead of 15-7 in the first quarter, they continued to build momentum throughout the match.
By halftime, they were ahead 30-23, showcasing their superiority on both ends of the court.
The third quarter proved to be pivotal as UCU Lady Canons capitalized on KIU Rangers’ struggles, outscoring them 18-8. This widened the gap even further, making a comeback for KIU Rangers nearly impossible.
The final quarter saw UCU Lady Canons maintain their lead, ultimately sealing a comprehensive 20-point victory with a score of 66-46.
Leading the charge for UCU Lady Canons was Shakira Nanvubya, who contributed 15 points to the team’s victory. She was ably supported by Hajara Najjuko and Aziida Nabayunga, who added 12 and 10 points respectively.
On the opposing side, Ine Kanyamunza who had 10 points, was the only KIU Rangers to reach double digits in scoring.
This victory marks the ninth win in 11 games for Nicholas Natuhereza’s UCU Lady Canons. Meanwhile, KIU Rangers who also finished with a 9-2 record, suffered their second defeat of the season, ending their first round campaign on a challenging note.
