The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) has observed a significant increase in tourist numbers in recent years, marking a positive trend for the country’s tourism sector. According to Mr. Eric Ntalumbwa, the Public Relations Officer of UWEC, the centre has experienced a steady rise in visitor arrivals, with the number surpassing 483,000 tourists annually.

Speaking during a donation ceremony on February 29, Mr. Ntalumbwa highlighted the growing popularity of UWEC among tourists, attributing the surge in visits to the rise of domestic tourism. He emphasized that UWEC attracts visitors from diverse backgrounds and engages them in conservation efforts and waste management initiatives.

The donation ceremony, which saw the handover of 60 recycle bins from Hariss International Limited, underscores the importance of sustainable waste management practices in preserving the environment. Mr. Ntalumbwa expressed gratitude for the donation, emphasizing its significance in managing litter and excess waste within the centre’s premises.

“We are witnessing a remarkable increase in tourist numbers at UWEC. Currently, we welcome over 483,000 visitors annually, representing a significant achievement for the tourism industry. As we strive to promote environmental conservation, waste management remains a key focus area,” Mr. Ntalumbwa stated.

Highlighting the role of UWEC in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Mr. Ntalumbwa emphasized the importance of waste management in achieving SDG 11, which focuses on sustainable cities and communities. He emphasized UWEC’s commitment to educating visitors and stakeholders about environmental conservation and waste reduction.

In light of the recent expansion of UWEC to include the Botanical Gardens, Mr. Ntalumbwa stressed the need for additional support in waste management efforts. He called upon partners and well-wishers to donate more recycle bins to accommodate the growing number of tourists visiting the centre.

Ms. Comfort Ahumuza, the Corporate and Sustainability Coordinator at Hariss International, reiterated the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement. She emphasized the significance of the partnership with UWEC in promoting responsible waste disposal practices and supporting conservation initiatives.

The donated recycle bins will be strategically placed across the zoo premises, encouraging tourists to responsibly dispose of their waste and participate in recycling initiatives. Ms. Ahumuza highlighted the importance of collective action in preserving the planet’s biodiversity and reducing plastic waste.

As UWEC continues to attract a growing number of tourists, partnerships with organizations like Hariss International play a crucial role in promoting sustainable tourism practices and fostering environmental conservation efforts. The donation of recycle bins serves as a testament to the shared commitment towards creating a greener and more sustainable future for Uganda’s wildlife and natural resources.
