Speaking to a large gathering of friends and well-wishers who gathered at jailed Erias Lukwago’s Wakaliga residence on Wednesday evening, PFF Deputy President Dr. Lulume Bayiga thanked God for creating Isaac Ssemakadde and preserving him to be the leader of Uganda Law Society (ULS) at this point in time.
Lulume said Ssemakadde emerged to become ULS President at a time when majority Ugandans had lost confidence and trust in lawyers because of their perceived indifference to governance issues, while developing extreme contempt for members of the learned profession. Lulume said failure to be relevant and to speak out on contemporary challenges of the people had caused Ugandans to write off lawyers as a useless lot only for God to unleash Isaac Ssemakadde to rescue the situation. He referred to him as Uganda’s legal messiah.
Lulume said the fact that Ssemakadde had continued to give effective leadership while in exile, which in itself is indicative of the extent to which the governance situation has become so bad in Uganda, is proof that fellow lawyers who made him ULS President have each and every reason to be proud of their decision. Lulume commended Ssemakadde for continuing to be concerned about the safety and welfare of his members, including Lukwago, as opposed to becoming indifferent simply because he is able to live comfortably wherever he is.
He thanked Ssemakadde for being the man at whose instigation and initiative the Wednesday Dhuwa prayer session was organized at the former Lord Mayor’s home. He said it was important to have a platform like that to enable relatives, friends and professional colleagues to come together and demonstrate solidarity with Erias Lukwago. He said even them as politicians today are deriving a lot of inspiration from the heroic acts of greats like Isaac Ssemakadde who he credited for being very broad-minded and courageous, his young age notwithstanding.
Lulume said he was so inspired with the prudence with which Isaac Ssemakadde had led Uganda Law Society under the New Radical Bar banner to the extent that he expressed interest to be enrolled and made a member of the same, even when he professionally is a medical doctor. He said he recently expressed his to Ssemakadde in a recent phone call and he was ready to pay any amount of money to be allowed to become part of the NRB universe only to be assured by Ssemakadde that such would never happen because he is a medical doctor and not a lawyer, which is a mandatory requirement for anyone to be admitted into RNB membership.
