The National Unity Platform (NUP) leadership has resolved to challenge the victory of National Resistance Movement flag bearer Andrew Muwonge for the Kayunga LC5 chairperson by elections in court.

The resolution has been announced by the NUP spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi in a press conference who asserted that they won the by-election despite what he termed as broad daylight thuggery by the NRM and the Electoral Commission (EC)

Ssenyonyi revealed that the party and their Candidate Nakwedde will take the matter to court, to seek for a recount but also in order to put the judiciary to test. Adding that they have tried everything to get the EC tally sheet as the norm should be, but EC officials have refused to grant them access.

“Simon Byabakama and his fellows in the EC have refused to give us tally sheets because they know what they did was foolish. We are not requesting for them, we are demanding for them to be released to us. Our candidate has informed us that she is going to court and we shall support her. We want to see if the calculators of court are better than those of Byabakama. If they don’t, then we shall have exposed the junta and court itself” said Ssenonyi

“Even some NRM members are saying they didn’t win in Kayunga. This is no longer a NUP matter. It is an issue in our country. What are you telling Ugandans? That voting doesn’t matter anymore?” Ssenyonyi added.

In her remarks, the NUP candidate Harriet Nakweede Kafeero thanked the people of Kayunga for massively voting for her, despite EC announcing otherwise she is available to serve her people from anywhere. Before challenging EC to call them back and declare the rightful win who is herself.

In a close-to-call election, the Kayunga Returning Officer, Jennifer Kyobutungi, announced that having got 31,830 votes against Nakweede’s 31,380, NRM’s Andrew Muwonge had beaten her closest rival with just 450 votes.

Meanwhile, the EC’s spokesperson Paul Bukenya has revealed that today afternoon Former NUP LC5 candidate Harriet Nakwedde has collected a copy of the result tally sheet from them through his official agent Mr. Lwanyaga Alex who signed on her behalf.
