A freshman’s year student at Kampala International University (KIU) Western Campus has died of alleged suicide inside his hostel, reports indicate.
Boniface Opirin, a student of Engineering was on Sunday 25 February, 2024 discovered hanging on a rope inside his hostel room at Kamukama Estates located in Cell D, Ishaka Bushenyi municipality by a fellow student, also a resident in the same estate when he had gone to pour dirty water in the washroom.
The student informed other students and the hostel caretaker who reported the matter to police.
The greater Bushenyi region police spokesperson, SSP Martial Tumusiime confirmed the death of Opirin.
According to Martial, police found two packages of rat poison in the deceased bag and an Identity Card belonging to Internal Security Organization (ISO).
Police attributed the cause of death to alleged suicide by the deceased student.
The body of Opirin was taken to KIU teaching hospital for a postmortem meanwhile as police is carrying out investigations.
The university has not yet issued out any formal communication regarding the death of their student.
