KOBs clinched their first victory of the season in the National 7s circuit, winning the Mbarara 7s on Sunday after a hard-fought 15-05 triumph over Buffaloes RFC in the final at Kakyeka Stadium.
This marked the first time both teams reached the final in this season’s series.
Derrick Tukwasibwe set the tone for Kobs early in the match with an unconverted try, leaving the score at 5-0. Pius Ogena followed up with another try, but once again, the conversion attempt was missed, bringing the score to 10-0.
Tukwasibwe then crossed the line again before halftime to make it 15-0, with the conversion attempt still off the mark.
Buffaloes responded in the second half with a try from Ivan Odhiambo, though the conversion was unsuccessful, leaving the final score at 15-5 in favor of Kobs.
On their way to the final, Kobs registered a 21-07 win over Rhinos in the quarterfinals and edged out Pirates 12-07 in the semifinals.
In the women’s competition, Avengers continued their dominant run with a convincing 20-07 victory over their rivals, the Black Pearls.
This win marked their fourth title of the season and a back-to-back win against the Black Pearls in the National 7s final.
Emily Lekuru opened the scoring for the Black Pearls with a try, converted by Charlotte Musobola, giving them an early 7-0 lead.
However, Avengers fought back, with Juliet Nandawula’s try narrowing the score to 5-7 by halftime.
The second half saw Avengers take full control, with tries from Christine Akello, Babirye Florence, and Nandawula sealing a 20-07 victory.
The Avengers’ path to the final included wins against Kigezi Queens (32-0), Black Pearls (15-14), Kitgum Queens (5-0), and Thunderbirds (29-7) in the semifinals.
This victory marks Kobs’ fourth title in the Western Region games. The MVP of the men’s tournament was Humphrey Ndahura of Buffaloes, while Gladys Wirembe of She Wolves took the honors in the women’s category.
