The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development has directed all Local Council I (LC I) chairpersons who are currently participating in election campaigns to temporarily stop handling land-related transactions until the electoral process is concluded.
In a public notice issued through the Ministry’s Communications Division, the directive is aimed at safeguarding the integrity of land transactions and preventing fraud, disputes and other irregularities during the election period.
“As the ongoing Local Council I (LC I) election campaigns approach their conclusion, all LC I Chairpersons who are currently campaigning are advised to refrain from participating in, witnessing, endorsing, recommending, or overseeing any land-related transactions until the electoral process has been concluded,” the Ministry said.
The Ministry explained that the temporary restriction is a precautionary measure intended to protect landowners and buyers during the transition period.
“This advisory has been issued as a precautionary measure to safeguard the integrity of land transactions during this transition period and to minimize the risk of disputes, fraud, or other irregularities that may arise,” the statement added.
The Ministry further advised members of the public not to seek services from campaigning LC I chairpersons on matters relating to land sales and purchases, witnessing or endorsing land agreements, land ownership verification, boundary dispute resolution, or any other transaction requiring the involvement of local administrative leaders.
For urgent land-related matters, the Ministry encouraged the public to seek assistance from qualified legal practitioners or use other lawful channels available.
“The Ministry urges the public to exercise patience until the election process is concluded. This precaution will help prevent costly mistakes and safeguard the interests of all parties,” the Ministry said.
The Ministry also thanked the public for their cooperation, emphasizing that the temporary suspension is intended to promote transparency and protect citizens from potential land-related fraud during the election period.
Ugandans are expected to elect their LC I chairpersons on July 28, 2026, after which the temporary directive will cease to apply.
