Leaders from the National Unity Platform (NUP) in Masaka have expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s top leadership regarding their handling of MP Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba’s situation. This follows the party’s call for Mpuuga’s resignation from his role as parliamentary Commissioner, alleging corruption and abuse of office due to his acceptance of a 500 million Shillings Service Award from the Parliamentary Commission.

In a statement released by the NUP secretariat, they urged for Mpuuga’s immediate resignation, citing concerns over corruption and abuse of office. The decision was reportedly made after Party President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu convened a meeting of senior party leaders, who unanimously agreed on Mpuuga’s indictment for violating the party’s core values.

However, leaders within the Masaka region are now demanding a public apology and retraction of the statement, considering it baseless and unreasonable. Charles Mary Mbanga, Chairperson of Masaka NUP Elders Council, read out a statement accusing the Party President of acting upon misinformation from certain individuals with ulterior motives aimed at tarnishing Mpuuga’s reputation.

According to Mbanga, the 500 million Shillings service award was rightfully allocated to Mpuuga as an honorary gratuity, a decision made by the Parliamentary Commission. He questions why the party interpreted this as an act of corruption, emphasizing that Mpuuga’s actions were in line with parliamentary procedures.

Mbanga further accuses the Party President of tolerating misconduct within certain factions of the party, which are now resorting to blackmail and sabotage against those who challenge their authority.

The leaders allege that the Party President has surrounded himself with a select few individuals, including some of his family members, who undermine potential leaders capable of assuming leadership roles within the party.

Meanwhile, Mpuuga has vehemently denied the allegations against him, labeling them as malicious and unfounded. He perceives the ongoing controversy as a deliberate attempt to tarnish his character and reputation.

In response to the party’s stance, Mpuuga states his readiness to endure any sacrifices necessary to restore integrity to the political landscape. He declines the call for his resignation, attributing it to spite, envy, and misrepresentation.

However, during a meeting with NUP leaders from Wakiso district, held at the Party Headquarters in Makerere-Kavule, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu reiterated the party’s position, insisting that Mpuuga owes both the party and the public an apology for the alleged misuse of taxpayers’ money.
