A tragic incident unfolded in Mbale City, Eastern Uganda, as police launch a manhunt for a trailer driver accused of causing the death of Sergeant Bernard Okwakolo, a resident of Mbale police barracks. The fatal collision occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning along the Mbale-Kumi road at Nabuyonga junction, leaving the officer dead.
Eyewitness reports indicate that Okwakolo was riding a motorcycle, registered as UED 274A Bajaj Boxer, when he was struck by a speeding trailer. Mr. Moses Gidudu, a boda boda rider who witnessed the crash, recounted that the trailer, traveling from the direction of Mbale, collided with the officer.
Upon receiving information about the incident, police dispatched a team of detectives to the scene, where they confirmed the identity of the officer and retrieved the wreckage of the motorcycle. Elgon Region Police Spokesperson, Mr. Rogers Taitika, reported that an unidentified trailer, believed to be joining the main Mbale-Kumi road, struck Okwakolo, resulting in his untimely death.
The crash site was thoroughly examined and documented by traffic officers, and Okwakolo’s body was transferred to the Mbale City mortuary for a postmortem examination. Describing the deceased as a dedicated, humble, and hardworking officer, Mr. Taitika announced that Okwakolo, who had served in the Uganda Police Force since 2005, would be laid to rest in Serere District.
