Hope Maurishia, an independent candidate contesting for the mbarara district woman Member of Parliament seat, has petitioned the High court in Kampala seeking a judicial review of a decision by the Electoral Commission (EC) that dismissed her complaint against the NRM flag bearer, Loydah Muhimbura Kyarikunda.

Maurishia had earlier petitioned the EC on November 14, 2025, challenging Kyarikunda’s nomination on grounds that her academic documents were allegedly forged, arguing that this warranted her disqualification from the race.

However, in a ruling dated November 15, 2025, the electoral commission tribunal, chaired by EC chairman Justice Simon Mugyenyi Byabakama, dismissed the complaint, stating that it lacked merit and failed to provide sufficient grounds to disqualify the NRM candidate.

Addressing the media at the weekend, Maurishia claimed that she has never officially received the tribunal’s ruling from the Electoral Commission, saying she only came across a copy circulating on social media.

She further alleged that upon inquiring at the EC registry, she was informed that the ruling had been received on her behalf by Deborah Nashemereirwe, whom Maurishia identified as a legal officer at the NRM secretariat and a close ally of Kyarikunda.

Dissatisfied with the EC’s handling of the matter, Maurishia said she filed an application for judicial review at the High Court Civil Division in Kampala on December 10, 2025, challenging the Commission’s decision.

She added that the High Court has since served the respondents, who have until Monday to file their responses.

Maurishia maintains that the academic documents submitted by Kyarikunda to the electoral commission during the nomination process, which equated her to an A-level graduate, are forged.
