Mercy Kanyesigye, one of the former contenders for the National Female Youth MP seat, has called on President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to investigate alleged irregularities in the recently concluded National Resistance Movement (NRM) youth elections (female category).
The elections, held on September 18, 2025, at district level, followed a directive by the party chairman and President of Uganda, Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. The polls had previously been suspended due to chaos at last month’s NRM National Delegates Conference at Kololo, where Museveni promised to organize fresh elections at a more suitable time.
Kanyesigye, who finished second in the election with 1,269 votes, alleges that the process was marred by fraud and interference. She accuses some NRM officials and security operatives of backing specific candidates, particularly Ampaire Diana, who emerged the winner with 1,912 votes.
The final tally for the female youth MP race was as follows:
- Ampaire Diana – 1,912 votes
- Mercy Kanyesigye – 1,269 votes
- Ikyiriza Gold – 41 votes
- Katusiime Susan – 21 votes
- Chebet Sandra Sarah – 12 votes
- Kobusinye Olivia – 7 votes
“President Museveni should urgently investigate what happened to restore trust and ensure fairness within the party,” Kanyesigye said. “In areas like Kyankwanzi, Yumbe, Kassanda, and Mityana, security operatives were putting immense pressure on voters, which is unacceptable in a democratic party like ours.”
Kanyesigye emphasized her intention to consult with the youth before determining her next steps.
“I will engage with young people across the country to understand their views and decide how best to proceed. Their voices must be heard,” she added.
Despite the challenges, Kanyesigye commended the youth delegates for their resilience and dedication throughout the electoral process. She also reiterated the need for inclusivity, unity, and transformation within the NRM party moving forward.
