Renowned entrepreneur and Vice Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in the eastern region, Capt. George Michael Mukula, was honored with a peace award by the Always Be Tolerant Organization (ABETO) for his significant contributions to peacebuilding within society. Mukula, a professional pilot, received the award at a ceremony held on March 1 at Hotel Africana in Kampala, alongside several top government officials and entrepreneurs who were also recognized for their peace efforts.
During his acceptance speech, Mukula stressed the pivotal role of peace in governance, urging ABETO to continue its advocacy, particularly through social media channels, to educate youth about the perils of violence. He emphasized the need for young people to prioritize peace, reminiscing about past conflicts and urging caution against internal discord.
Expressing concern over the proliferation of intolerance and hate speech on social media platforms, Mukula warned about its potential to incite civil unrest and tribalism, especially among impressionable youth. He urged vigilance among young people, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace in Uganda, acknowledging the nationwide peace achieved under President Museveni’s leadership.
Mukula’s peace and reconciliation award recognized his efforts not only in Rwanda but also in Burundi and other conflict-affected regions like Kenya and South Sudan. The ceremony also honored other notable individuals, including Silver Mugisha, Mary Karooro Okurut, Ziria Tibalwa Waako, Ambassador Adonia Ayebare, Margaret Sekaggya, Sam Mwandah, Tom Obong Okello, Julia Sebutinde, and Owek Nelson Kawalya, among others.

According to ABETO chairman Moses Musana, awardees are selected by a committee based on their performance in their respective areas of operation. The committee vets nominees and conducts research to ensure deserving individuals are recognized for their contributions to peace and harmony.
ABETO, a volunteer-driven, non-governmental organization, is committed to promoting peace, harmony, and conflict resolution through peaceful methods in Uganda, Africa, and globally. Through initiatives like the peace awards, ABETO aims to foster a culture of tolerance and understanding, contributing to a more peaceful and harmonious society.
