More Trouble As United States Sanctions Five Ugandan Gov’t Officials Including Speaker Anita Among – Ultimate News
The United Kingdom on 30th April sanctioned three Ugandan politicians; Speaker Anita Among and two former Museveni ministers; Dr Mary Gorreti Kitutu and Agnes Nanduutu who were both in charge of the Karamoja ministry until last month when they were dropped from cabinet.
The UK attributed their sanctioning to their involvement in corruption particularly the Karamoja Mabaati scandal which were meant for the poor but decided to divert the iron sheets for their own benefit.

Much as the UK sanctioned three people, only one person the Speaker Anita Among has caught the attention even of the president who is pushing to understand the events leading to the sanctioning of Anita Among.
The president says the UK high commission in Uganda earlier informed him that beyond the Mabaati scandal, Anita Among was sanctioned because she also owns a house in London. He ordered the IGG and the Attorney General to inquire about this, they reported that Anita Among doesn’t own a house in the UK.
However in another Museveni letter yesterday, he revealed that he had been given evidence that indeed Speaker Anita Among owns a house in London and even revealed the address of the house.
“I have got information that is contrary to what you told me, that you indeed, own a house in London in the form of Flat 4, Silk House, 7 Waterden road, London, E20 3AL, United Kingdom”-Museveni revealed in a letter to Anita Among.
The speaker would later the same evening through her social media pages come out to deny owning any property in the UK but vehemently attributed her troubles and woes to her spirited fight against homosexuality owing from the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 which parliament passed last year.
“Fello Ugandans, while this matter is exciting to some because of our own internal political contradictions and intrigue, I insist and wish to alert all, soundly, that the issue is not the alleged corruption or ownership in the UK. The attempts to forge and claim that i own property when their own records show the contrary tells it all. The real crux of the matter is about targeting Anita Among for being vocal against homosexuality. The rest is a cover-up”-Anita denied
Now before the sanctioned politicians come to reality with the facts leading to their sanctioning, the United States has also sanctioned several Ugandans politicians including Anita Among who was one month ago sanctioned by the UK.
In a statement released by Mathew Miller, the Department of State Spokesperson, the United States has sanctioned five current and former Ugandan officials for their involvement in corruption and gross human rights violation.
Those now sanctioned by the United States include Speaker Anita Among, Dr Mary Goreti Kitutu, Agnes Nandutu, Minister Amos Lugolobi. The reasons behind their sanctioning rotate around the Karamoja Mabaati scandal just like the UK earlier said.
“Speaker of Parliament Anita Among is designated due to involvement in significant corruption tied to her leadership of Uganda’s Parliament. Former Minister of Karamoja Affairs Mary Goretti Kitutu, former Minister of State for Karamoja Affairs Agnes Nandutu, and Minister of State for Finance Amos Lugolobi are being designated due to their involvement in significant corruption related to conduct that misused public resources and diverted materials from Uganda’s neediest communities. All four officials abused their public positions for their personal benefit at the expense of Ugandans.”-the statement reads in part
The other fifth person sanctioned by the US is former Deputy Chief of Defence Forces Maj Gen Peter Elwelu who is also accused of gross human rights violations specifically his involvement in the Kasese (Rwenzururu) kingdoms operations in 2016 where 100s were killed by the army
“Additionally, Peter Elwelu, former Deputy Chief of the Ugandan People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) is designated due to his involvement in gross violations of human rights. Specifically, Peter Elwelu was involved, while commanding UPDF forces, in extrajudicial killings that were committed by members of the UPDF. As a result of these actions, the designated Ugandan officials are generally ineligible for entry into the United States”-the statement further reads.
The US also says it says it will issue sanctions on several other Ugandan officials for their involvement in undermining the democratic process and repressing members of marginalized or vulnerable populations in Uganda.
