Madi Okollo, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Madi Okollo district Woman Member of Parliament Hon Joanne Aniku Okia has appealed to women not to misuse their attained empowerment to despise their husbands.

The caution comes amidst a surge in Gender Based Violence Cases (GBV) in the district. According to a recent survey report by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) , Physical violence among women and girls age 10-59 is leading form of violence within the district with Ogoko sub county being the worst affected.

Aniku Okia made the plea while presiding over the district celebrations of the international women’s day held at Chanya Baiya Primary School playground in Okollo sub county on Friday.

According to Anuku Okia, although the government has continued to empower the women and girl child through education and other programmes like Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme (UWEP) and the parish development model, women should not misuse such empowerments to create  power struggles with their husbands.

This year’s women’s celebrations marks 47 years since the United Nations Organization declared 8th March a global holiday to mark laudable milestones in the women’s movement.

Swaib Toko, the Madi Okollo Resident district commissioner commended the government for championing women empowerment through among others the affirmative action. He instead appealed to parents to ensure that they support the education of the girl child.

Meanwhile, Ismail Drabe, the LC 5 chairperson of Madi Okollo district cautioned the women against defaulting government programmes that are meant to uplift their livelihood. Drabe further appealed to women to work hard if they are to bring positive change in their families.

This year’s international women’s day commemoration was held under the theme “Accelerating Gender Equality through Economic Empowerment”. Katakwi District hosted the national celebrations of the international women’s day.
