Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) members of parliament, Muhammad Ssegirinya and Allan Ssewanyana representing Kawempe North and Makindye West have been slapped with more charges of murder and further remanded.

The two legislators who appeared before Masaka Magistrate court presided over by Chief magistrate, Charles Yeteise, were told about the new murder charges brought against them before remanding them to Kigo prison until the 13th, October, 2021 for further mention of their case.

Prosecution states that Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana caused the death of Joseph Bwanika, a resident of Kisekka B village, Kankamba parish in Lwengo District on August 2, 2021.

However, they were not allowed to take plea or apply for bail because Masaka Chief Magistrate’s Court does not have the jurisdiction to try murder which is a capital offence in nature. But Kampala woman Mp who also doubles as their lawyer said will apply for bail before high court.

The state also amended the old charge sheet to include one more suspect one Jackson Kanyike (accused number seven).
According to the amended charge sheet, the two MPs were allegedly financing Kanyike to commit acts of terrorism and that he (Kanyike) also participated in the murders that happened in Masaka sub region where close to 30 people were killed.

The legislators were brought amidst tight security, they were limping and they seemed to be in great pain. the two also requested court to allow their person doctors access them but this was not granted by the trial magistrate saying that the kigo prison health centre can handle their health situation.

Meanwhile, Opposition Members of Parliament vowed not to attend plenary until government presents in court and releases the incarcerated fellow MPs, Muhammad Ssegirinya and Allan Ssewanyana representing Kawempe North and Makindye West.

The Mps also want the government to set free all supporters who are still rotting in prison and were arrested on account of supporting the opposition.

Joint security forces re-arrested both Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana shortly after they were released from Kigo prison.

Parliament Speaker Jacob Oulanyah has since condemned the manner in which the MPs were arrested, saying technocrats in government complicate matters for government by the haphazard manner in which policies are implemented
