Mpuuga Expresses Admiration for Bobi Wine but Raises Concerns on NUP Progress

Matthias Mpuuga, the former Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, has reaffirmed his respect and support for Robert ‘Bobi Wine’ Kyagulanyi, the president of their party, the National Unity Platform (NUP). However, Mpuuga has expressed apprehensions that Kyagulanyi’s actions might impede the progress of the NUP, a party established just before the 2021 general elections.

Speaking on Bulange Mengo-based CBS FM station on Saturday, Mpuuga stated, “We admire him and want to assist him in reaching greater heights, but we also need to develop as a party.” He emphasized the importance of not being hindered in their growth process.

Recently, Kyagulanyi requested Mpuuga, who also serves as the party’s deputy president for the Buganda region, to step down from his position as parliamentary commissioner, citing allegations of corruption and abuse of office.

In response, Mpuuga, the Member of Parliament for Nyendo-Mukungwe, denied accusations of improperly receiving a Shs500 million ‘service award’ from Parliament, as claimed. He released a statement on Friday refuting these allegations and asserting that the funds were acquired through legitimate means during his tenure as Leader of the Opposition.

The strained relationship between Mpuuga and Kyagulanyi, fueled by disagreements over operational methods, has garnered significant media attention. Mpuuga clarified that the allocated funds underwent thorough scrutiny by relevant parliamentary committees to ensure legality and transparency.

Despite assertions by former LoP Ogenga Latigo that the award should have been debated in parliament, Mpuuga explained that the funds are yet to be disbursed to him, even though the 2022 meeting minutes indicated immediate effect. He also emphasized his longstanding relationship with Speaker Anita Among, denying any special favors beyond legal procedures in Parliament.

While affirming his loyalty to Kyagulanyi, Mpuuga stressed the importance of facilitating the party’s progress without hindrance. He cautioned against indiscipline and emphasized the need to show respect to the Kabaka of Buganda, condemning any disparagement directed towards him or other traditional authorities.

Mpuuga reiterated his unwavering support for Buganda’s royal figures and called for unity in upholding their dignity. Additionally, he addressed the importance of professionalism and integrity in politics, advocating for accountability regarding parliamentary allowances and timely disbursement to fulfill legislative responsibilities effectively.
