National Resistance Movement (NRM) Presidential Candidate General Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has vowed to address two long-standing development needs in Obongi District: electricity and road infrastructure.

While addressing a campaign rally at Lionga Booma Grounds in Obongi Town Council, General Museveni confirmed that funding is already available for extending electricity to the district. He noted that procurement processes are underway to identify a suitable contractor for the project.

Museveni emphasized that the NRM government has successfully connected the West Nile sub-region to the national electricity grid. Once Obongi is connected in the next term, he said, the entire sub-region will be set for industrialisation.

The President also committed to constructing a tarmac road, beginning with a 132-kilometre stretch covering Obongi–Adjumani, Obongi–Panyamur, and reaching Rhino Camp. He announced plans to reinforce the Ministry of Works’ regional road maintenance stations to ensure timely repairs and warned local road officials against negligence and laziness.

In a wider development agenda for Obongi, Museveni pledged:

Health: A fully-fledged general hospital and the elevation of several health centers to Health Centre III and IV levels.

Education: Construction of additional primary and secondary schools in the remaining parishes and sub-counties.

Fish Farming: A special aquaculture initiative targeting communities along the River Nile, including the digging of fish ponds and provision of training in modern fish farming as an income-generating activity.

General Museveni reiterated the NRM’s commitment to wealth creation and socioeconomic empowerment, calling on the electorate to resist diversions and embrace tested methods of development.

He underlined his deep understanding of the area, stating he has closely followed Obongi’s transformation journey for decades. From a population of just 20,000 in the 1980s, Obongi now hosts over 160,000 people,  a growth he attributes to improved peace, health services, and development under the NRM government.

Museveni also commended the decision to grant Obongi district status, calling it a key move in ending historical marginalisation and fostering inclusion.

Other leaders at the rally, including Obongi NRM district chairperson Abibu Buga Khemis and NRM Vice Chairperson for Northern Uganda, Dennis Hamson Obua, praised the district’s progress since its creation six years ago. They urged voters to support Museveni and the NRM for continuity and sustained development.
