Moroto, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Nakapiripirit district Principal Assistant Secretary is in trouble on accusations of unlawfully distributing government iron sheets to ineligible individuals. Ilukol Jobs Lomenen was detained on Saturday following a tip-off from concerned community members regarding the alleged distribution of iron sheets to unauthorized recipients.
In January 2024, the Government, through the Prime Minister’s office, delivered 5,626 pieces of iron sheets to Nakapiripirit district. On February 2, the State Minister for Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Esther Davinia Anyakun, inaugurated the iron sheet distribution exercise at the district headquarters in the presence of local leaders, district officials, and security forces, among others.
However, on February 9th, Ilukol unilaterally decided to distribute the iron sheets to individuals not designated as beneficiaries from Tokora and Moruita parishes, without the involvement of other stakeholders. Michael Longole, the Mt. Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect stands accused of mishandling the iron sheets intended for the benefit of reformed warriors.
Longole mentioned that the suspect deliberately distributed the iron sheets to unauthorized recipients without the knowledge of top district officials and security forces, who are leading the distribution exercise. He revealed that 260 iron sheets have been retrieved from the unauthorized recipients as investigations commence.
He says that they decided to grant the suspect police bond to facilitate the recovery of more evidence as the joint search progresses. The Office of the Prime Minister is presently distributing iron sheets to reformed Karamojong warriors who voluntarily surrendered illegal firearms to the government.
