No Reported Fatalities or Serious Injuries in Uganda House Building Attack

Bagiire Vincent Waiswa, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, has clarified that while the Uganda House building sustained extensive damage, there are no reported fatalities or serious injuries.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Waiswa noted that, in the wake of protests in Kenya on June 25, demonstrators abandoned peaceful methods and resorted to property destruction. The newly refurbished Uganda House, a commercial building on Kenyatta Avenue in the Nairobi Central Business District, was among the affected properties.

“The six-floor Uganda House building, slated for reopening on Friday, June 28, has been undergoing renovations and was only occupied by commercial tenants on the ground floor. The other floors, including the third floor which previously housed the Consular Office, had been vacated for renovations,” he highlighted.

“It is also important to note that none of the diplomatic or consular staff were in the building at the time the fire broke out,” he added.

He emphasized that the Government of the Republic of Uganda maintains strong relations with the Government and people of Kenya. “We support peaceful demonstrations as a democratic right but condemn in the strongest terms violence that leads to property destruction and loss of lives,” Waiswa stated.

Protests erupted in Kenya on Tuesday, primarily driven by Generation Z, against the controversial Finance Bill passed by the country’s Parliament last week. Initially peaceful, the demonstrations turned violent as police fired live ammunition and tear gas, provoking protesters who subsequently destroyed several properties and set buildings ablaze.
