The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party Vice Chairman for Western Region, Eng Jonard Asiimwe, has said NRM leaders should not support any candidate who lost in NRM primary elections and decided to come back as an independent candidate.

He continued that although the electoral laws of Uganda allow independent candidates to stand on any elective position, the NRM party Constitution bars members who participated in party primaries to recontest as independents.

It rather urges them to support those to which they lost since they are recognised as NRM flag bearers.

“It will be absurd for party leaders in the city campaigning for non-NRM candidates including independent candidates in violation of the party principles,” Eng Asiimwe said.

The now one of the top NRM leaders nationwide, revealed that he has already spotted some NRM leaders in Hoima city secretly funding independent candidates claiming that they are NRM leaning.

“So, you need to know that whoever is an independent candidate is a dangerous person. They move on two sides; and how can you be an independent person in a country like this?” he asked.

Eng Asiimwe wants NRM to score 80% victory up from 52% registered in the previous elections in the region

According to Eng Asiimwe, if NRM leaders cooperate and ensure high victory for the party in the region, it will be easy for him to lobby for high profile positions from the president.

He pledged to continue engaging NRM losers who have chosen to return as independents so that they can drop the idea and rally behind flag bearers.

Eng Asiimwe also encouraged voters to only elect NRM candidates
