Four candidates were on Wednesday October 22, 2025 nominated at the Rukiga District Electoral Commission offices by the District Returning Officer, Ms. Rebecca Mababazi, marking the close of the first day of the nomination process.
The duly nominated candidates include Capt. (Rtd) Damson Kivumba (Independent), Hon. Bish Roland Ndyomugyenyi (Independent), Counsel Patrick Kiconco Katabazi (NRM), and Jackline Tukamushaba, the Western Region Vice Chairperson for the National Unity Platform (NUP), who is contesting for the position of Woman Member of Parliament.
While addressing the media shortly after the nominations at the Rukiga District Electoral Commission offices in Muhanga Town Council, Ms. Mababazi said the nomination exercise was conducted peacefully and in accordance with Electoral Commission guidelines. She reminded all nominated candidates that no one is allowed to begin campaigning until November 10, 2025, as stipulated by the national election roadmap.
She further revealed that the Electoral Commission will hold a harmonization meeting for all parliamentary aspirants on November 4, 2025, to finalize campaign schedules and prevent clashes in the field.
Jackline Tukamushaba, the Deputy President of the National Unity Platform (NUP), said people in the Kigezi Sub-region continue to live in poverty due to what she termed as the ruling government’s failure to deliver essential services to ordinary citizens. She pledged to economically empower the people of Rukiga to improve their livelihoods, noting that the district lacks many basic services and therefore needs change to spur development.
Capt. (Rtd) Damson Kivumba, an aspiring Rukiga County legislator, said irregularities in the NRM primaries had forced him to contest as an independent. He expressed confidence in the Independent Electoral Commission and pledged to prioritize improvements in infrastructure, health services, and teachers’ welfare, blaming poor leadership for Rukiga’s slow development.
Incumbent Hon. Bish Roland Ndyomugyenyi pledged to continue improving infrastructure in Rukiga County and to lobby for the upgrade of the district hospital to a referral facility, noting that funding support from Turkey is already in the pipeline.
Counsel Patrick Kiconco Katabazi, the NRM candidate, pledged to represent Rukiga’s interests in the NRM Parliamentary Caucus and to work towards fulfilling the party manifesto.
