Office of the President Commends Progress of GKMA–UDP Projects in Mukono

Mpata Sub-County, Mukono District – The Office of the President, under the Department of Economic Monitoring, has conducted a monitoring exercise in Mukono District focusing on projects under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Program (GKMA–UDP).

The review emphasized the program’s pillars of mobility, job creation, and urban resilience, with particular attention on the Ntenjeru–Bule Road Project (7.8km).

The exercise took place in Mpata Sub-County, where stakeholders assessed the progress of the road and prepared for its official launch on Thursday, 2nd October 2025, at Mpatta Playground in Ntenjeru Town Council, expected to host over 400 guests.

The monitoring was attended by Principal Assistant Chief Administrative Officer Mr. Kamara Daniel, representing CAO Ms. Elizabeth Namanda, alongside district departmental heads, the GKMA project focal person in Mukono, contractor China Railway 5, consultancy teams PEC and GESH, district leaders, and officials from the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development.

While commending the teams for their dedication, contractors were cautioned on waste management and tasked to establish a permanent disposal plan to safeguard the environment.

Mr. Bamwesi Nicolas, Secretary to the Secretariat for Sustainable Urban Development and Housing Programs, emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to quarterly monitoring to ensure timely delivery and compliance with standards.

According to District Planner Mr. Cololins Ssebadduka, Focal Person for GKMA–UDP in Mukono, significant progress has been made. Major procurements completed include Upgrade of the 7.8km Ntenjeru–Bule Road,Consultancy services for environmental and social safeguards and Supervision consultancy services

The Key milestones include the Site handover which was on 8th July 202,Commencement of physical works on 2nd September 2025 and Official launch to take place on 2nd October 2025

On-site progress includes establishment of the contractor’s camp, installation of road signage, provision of first aid kits, equipment inspection, mobilization of machinery, and groundwork such as drainage separation and benchmark hipping. Out of 234 landlords affected, 83 have provided consent to proceed.

Beyond mobility, Mr. Ssebadduka noted GKMA–UDP initiatives in urban resilience and environment, including bridge construction and stormwater management in Katosi Town Council, as well as work space and job creation projects like a slaughter slab, skilling centre, and mini-market at Kyetume in Nakisunga Sub-County on 50 acres of titled district land with approvals secured.

Mr. Peter Drani, Assistant Commissioner in the Department of Economic Monitoring, stated that the visit aimed to ensure that project activities are on schedule and executed according to agreed timelines with contractors.

The Ntenjeru–Bule Road project is poised to transform mobility, stimulate economic activity, and strengthen urban resilience in Mukono and surrounding areas. Stakeholders expressed confidence that, with continued monitoring, strict adherence to environmental safeguards, and active community collaboration, the project will be completed on time and to standard, setting a benchmark for other GKMA–UDP initiatives across the region.
