Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei has been critically injured in an attack allegedly perpetrated by her boyfriend.
She recently competed in the 10,000-meter race at the Paris Olympics.
The incident occurred on Monday in Trans Nzoia County, where the athlete was reportedly doused with petrol and set on fire.
Cheptegei was immediately rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret for treatment, according to reports from Kenya.
The 10,000-meter runner sustained severe burns covering 75 percent of her body and is currently in critical condition at MTRH, where she is receiving intensive medical care.
Her alleged boyfriend, who is accused of carrying out the heinous act, also sustained serious burns during the incident and is being treated at the same hospital.
Kenya Police stated that they are conducting a thorough probe to uncover the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Initially, Cheptegei was admitted to Kitale Level Four Hospital, but due to the severity of her injuries, she was transferred to MTRH for specialized care.
Cheptegei, a resident of Cheminy in Uganda, had recently purchased land in Trans Nzoia County, where she built a house and stayed during her training sessions.
