Uganda’s Oscar Chelimo’s quest for a medal at the ongoing Paris Olympics ended in disappointment.
Chelimo finished 20th in the Men’s 5000m final, clocking a time of 13:31.56.
The race was always going to be a challenging one for Chelimo, especially as the lone Ugandan in the field following the withdrawal of defending champion Joshua Cheptegei and compatriot Jacob Kiplimo.
Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen claimed the gold medal with ease, crossing the finish line in 13:13.66.
This victory served as redemption for Ingebrigtsen after his earlier setbacks in the 1500m final.
Ronald Kwemoi of Kenya, the husband of Ugandan marathoner Stella Chesang, secured the silver medal, while the United States’ Grant Fisher took bronze.
Uganda’s faint hopes now turn to the Women’s Marathon, where the country will be represented by Stella Chesang, Rebecca Cheptegei, and Mercyline Chelangat on Sunday morning.
