The third In-Demand Skills stream draw in Ontario was also the biggest one

On September 22, Ontario invited 72 immigrant candidates to apply for a provincial nomination. Under its new intake mechanism, the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) hosted its third in-Demand Skills stream draw. Ontario’s new Expression of Interest (EOI) system replaced the traditional first-come, first-served methodology. It allows interested applicants to register for an invitation from Ontario.

A total of 65 individuals were invited through the general draw. Ontario also held a draw for the Regional Immigration Pilot, to which seven candidates were invited. This stream does not require an EOI score. However, invited candidates were required to have work experience in one of the following occupations listed by sector and the National Occupational Classification (NOC) code.

More about In-Demand Skills Stream

This category places provincial demands ahead of professional skill level. Many immigration programs target occupations that the government considers to be “highly skilled.” Nonetheless, Ontario is still experiencing labour shortages in “low skilled” occupations.

Foreign employees with a qualified job offer in Ontario can apply for a nomination provided they have at least nine months of work experience in the province during the preceding three years. Seasonal labour does not count toward satisfying the work requirement.

If the candidate fulfilled the criteria of minimum work hours, they might get qualified for a part-time job. However, to match the requirement, the number of work hours must be equal to 1200 hours of paid employment in one or two jobs over 18 months. Alternatively, individuals who worked in more than one job would need to work for at least 30 hours per week and that too for nine months, totalling nearly 1200 hours.

There are a few further conditions for qualifying, including a high school diploma, a language score of at least 4 in all proficiencies, and appropriate settlement money.
