Over 100 Displaced as River Zoka Floods Ukusijoni Sub-County

A devastating flood caused by the overflow of River Zoka has displaced over 100 individuals in Ukusijoni sub-county, Adjumani district.

The flood, which occurred on Sunday, has particularly affected Rubangabin and Sinyanya villages, submerging homes, latrines, and several acres of crop gardens. Additionally, a section of the Obongi-Sinyanya-Adjumani Road leading to the Sinyanya ferry landing site has been rendered impassable for vehicles and pedestrians.

Mansur Butele, a resident of Sinyanya village, lamented the frequent occurrence of floods since 2020 and appealed to the government for assistance in relocating to safer areas. Evelyn Droru, another affected resident, attributed the floods to a two-day downpour and highlighted the challenge of accessing schools due to submerged bridges.

Michael Cadri, a trader, highlighted the impact of the high water levels on the movement of goods between the Adjumani and Obongi districts. Peter Taban Data, the Adjumani Resident District Commissioner, disclosed that officials have been deployed for a rapid assessment of the disaster’s magnitude. He also informed that the Uganda Roads Authority (UNRA) has been notified to address the recurrent flooding issue along the Obongi-Sinyanya-Adjumani Road.

Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, the Obongi Resident District Commissioner, cautioned road users to exercise caution while navigating through flooded sections of the road.

These floods follow a similar incident two months ago, which disrupted travel between Adjumani and Obongi districts, leading UNRA to temporarily suspend the operations of the Obongi-Sinyanya ferry as a precautionary measure against safety hazards.
