Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai has clinched Silver medal in the 3000m Steeplechase at the ongoing 2024 Paris Olympics.
Chemutai, who triumphed in this event at the Tokyo Olympics, was outpaced by Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi, who clocked an astonishing 8:52.76, breaking the Olympic record.
Chemutai appeared to be in control throughout the race and seemed poised to become the first Ugandan to successfully defend an Olympic title.
However, Yavi overtook her at the final obstacle and held onto her lead to secure the gold.
A visibly disappointed Chemutai lay on the track as Yavi, the World Record holder, danced in celebration.
Yavi’s record-breaking time of 8:52.76 shaved over six seconds off the previous Olympic record set in 2008.
Despite the loss, Chemutai set a new national record for Uganda with her time of 8:53.34.
Kenya’s Cherotich earned the bronze with a personal best of 8:55.15.
It’s the second medal for Uganda at the ongoing games after Joshua Cheptegei won gold in Men’s 10,000m.
