PM Nabbanja Holds Bilateral Talks with Key UN Officials, Emphasizes Need for Continued Support

The Prime Minister of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Nabbanja Robinah, engaged in bilateral talks with two senior United Nations officials to strengthen relations and mutual cooperation.

Accompanied by Hon. Nobert Mao, Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, and Prof. Pamela Mbabazi, Chair of the National Planning Authority, Nabbanja met Ms. Joyce Msuya, the Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, at the G77 offices in New York.

The discussions covered a range of topics, with a focus on the urgent need for disaster response in regions such as Mount Elgon and Kasese. “Although the government of Uganda has developed mechanisms for disaster management, there is a need for support from the United Nations Humanitarian Affairs,” Nabbanja stated.

Ms. Joyce Msuya assured the Prime Minister of the UN’s readiness to support Uganda and its disaster-prone areas.

In a related development, Nabbanja also held talks with Claver Gatete, the UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). Nabbanja commended UNECA for its support, particularly in assessing the performance of local governments to improve service delivery.

Hon. Nobert Mao emphasized the need to address vulnerabilities for socio-economic transformation. Claver Gatete highlighted the importance of African solutions to address the continent’s challenges.

Uganda assumed the leadership of the G77+China from the Republic of Cuba during the 3rd South Summit of the G77 plus China Heads of State and Government at Speke Resort Convention Center, Munyonyo, under the theme “Leaving No One Behind.”

The meeting was also attended by Dr. Albert Byamugisha, head of the SDGs secretariat in Uganda, among others.
