Police in Jinja city have made significant strides in the investigation into the tragic murder of the former headteacher of Mwiri Primary School. Following an extensive operation, law enforcement officers apprehended a suspect believed to be connected to the brutal killing. Additionally, they successfully recovered a motorcycle presumed to have been used in the attack on Alexander Isabirye as he made his way to church on the morning of Friday, March 1, 2024.
The arrest and retrieval of the motorcycle came as a result of a joint security operation conducted over three days in Jinja city and district. A total of 87 suspects were apprehended during this operation, with one individual identified as a prime suspect in Isabirye’s murder. Isabirye was viciously attacked at his residence in Nakanyonyi village, Bugembe, Jinja city northern division, while he was en route to church at 6:00 am.
James Mubi, the spokesperson for the Kiira Police region, confirmed the developments and expressed the police’s commitment to ensuring justice for the victim. Isabirye was initially rushed to a nearby hospital but was later transferred to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital and subsequently to Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.
During the joint security operation, law enforcement officers targeted various areas including Bugembe, Mafubira, Mpumudde, Masese, Madhivan Market, Nile Avenue, Walukuba, and Kirinya. The operation yielded the recovery of several items such as iron bars, machetes, marijuana, burglary tools, and stolen property from the suspects.

Among the suspects apprehended were 17 juveniles described as “radicalized street children,” who were allegedly involved in various criminal activities including theft, housebreaking, and causing disturbances during late-night hours. Additionally, numerous adult suspects were arrested in connection with aggravated robbery, malicious damage, obstruction of justice, and public nuisance.
Residents of Jinja city commended the security forces for their efforts in cracking down on criminal activities. However, they expressed concerns about the ongoing power outage in several areas, including Nakanyonyi complex, Namulesa, and Kyamagwa, which they believe is exacerbating the crime situation. Alice Nangobi, a resident of Namulesa village, highlighted the need for urgent intervention to address the power outage and enhance security in the affected areas.
James Mubi emphasized the necessity of establishing a dedicated police station in Jinja city’s northern division to effectively address the rising crime rates. He called for a multi-sectoral meeting involving various stakeholders to devise strategies for enhancing security and policing efforts in the region.
